Conspiracy Theories: Escape from Alcatraz

Alcatraz opened as a federal men’s prison in August of 1934 holding the “baddest of the bad” criminals as it was seen to be “escape-proof.” Throughout the years 36 men attempted to escape, however, only three men successfully did so.  In this lesson, students will explore the conspiracy theories behind this infamous escape from “The Rock.” Students will use strategies from Bring Learning Alive! and Making Thinking Visible to answer the question of whether or not the three survived their escape.

Below, you will find student samples (8th graders) of the various activities embedded in this lesson plan including:

  • 3-2-1 Exit Ticket
  • The Guntown Gazette
  • Video Summary
  • Inmate Letters
