Mapping Mississippi

By organizing maps of Mississippi in chronological order beginning in 1817 to 1839, elementary students will develop an understanding of the growth of Mississippi shortly after its induction into statehood. Students are encouraged to use the primary sources to make distinct observations and ask critical questions about Mississippi. Upon examination of the maps, students are able to see the state capital move from Natchez to Jackson, as well as the direction of development in Mississippi. Students will apply their observations and learning to create a writing piece comparing the different maps.
